1,403 gastroenteritis cases in Gulbarga district

As many as 1,403 Gastroenteritis (GE) cases were reported in the district in July which is the highest in the last seven months.

District Health Officer Dr Shivaraj Sajjanashetty told Express that one person died of gastroenteritis. Two cholera cases were reported in the district, the DHO added. Highest number of GE cases were reported from Sedam taluk-355  followed by Jewargi-291, Chincholi-223, Chittapur-191, Gulbarga (Urban)-141, Gulbarga (Rural)-96, Afzalpur and Aland-50 each and migration from other districts-6. Anita (30), wife of Prakash Hadapad in Chittapur taluk, died due to the disease.

In the last seven months, as many as 4,516 GE cases were reported in the district, out of which three people died of the disease. Also, eight cases of cholera have been reported in the last seven months.

Sajjanashetty said that major cause for the disease was the consumption of contaminated water. He said that the Health Department examined water samples from nearly 500 borewells in the area and found that 30 per cent of them have contaminated water which will lead to diseases.
