Exclusive park for Butterflies

The unique park for butterflies was inaugurated at Beluvai near Moodabidri on Sunday. Named Sammilan Shetty’s Butterfly Park, it is dedicated to the growth of the butterflies and for public viewing. Various varieties of butterflies can be seen.

Park promoter Sammilan Shetty, who is a post graduate degree holder in Bio-Science, was driven by his love for butterflies and dedicated 7.35 acres for this park. 

Shetty said that butterflies attract everybody, from children to the elderly, with its beauty and colourful wings. He displayed a slide show of various varieties of butterflies at the programme.

Bombay Natural History Society (BHNS) general manager Isaac Kehimkar said that butterflies needs to be protected by keeping the environment green. There are about 1500 varieties in India. The Himalayas, Andamans and Western Ghats have wonderful varieties of butterflies.     

BHNS deputy director Shubhalaxmi Vaylure also spoke.

Friendly Flies

Karnataka state Wildlife Board member N A Madhyastha said that the butterflies can be invited with a drop of honey and few flowers at home. The life of butterflies is short, he said. 

No to Mega Industries

Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel said that people of Dakshina Kannada need to protest against mega industries. They pose a threat to the environment and small creatures like butterflies will not survive, he said.
