Bears maul woman to death

Two huge bears along with a cub attacked the group.  While the other women fled, Satyabhama was mauled to death. By the time they fetched help, the bears had brutally killed Satyabhama.

A woman was killed in a bear attack at Betane village in Khanapur taluk on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as Satyabhama Shankar Gawade (52).

According to sources, Satyabhama, accompanied by four other women were returning home after finishing work in a field.

Two huge bears along with a cub attacked the group.  While the other women fled, Satyabhama was mauled to death. By the time they fetched help, the bears had brutally killed Satyabhama.

Kankumbi Range Forest Officer S S Sangoli, along with his  team, rushed to the spot and sent the body for postmortem.

Forest Department officials announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family members of the deceased and the amount will be provided at the earliest.

Deputy Conservator of Forest Madhav Ambadi handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to Satyabhama’s family on Monday.

Khanapur MLA Arvind Patil and Assistant Conservator of Forests P K Naik were present.
