A sea of humanity paid homage to Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, 60, who was laid to rest with full state honours on Wednesday.
All roads led to the Mysore Palace and Nanjangud Road as people from all over the erstwhile Mysore empire made a beeline to Madhuvana, a huge garden near the palace, to catch a glimpse of the departed scion.
Amid slogans hailing Wadiyar, his nephew Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs lit the pyre as a galaxy of VIPs watched from close quarters. Kanthraj Urs is the son of Wadiyar’s eldest sister Gayatri Devi and K B Ramachandra Raj Urs, both of whom are no more.
Tears rolled down the cheeks of many when Wadiyar’s wife Maharani Pramoda Devi offered her last respects to him. People in the hall inside the palace watched in silence as she hugged Wadiyar’s body and broke down.
People sprinkled flowers on Wadiyar’s body as it was taken out in a decorated, gold-plated palanquin.
