Notice to be served to five MLCs

They will not be barred from attending the coming budget session: Shankarmurthy

Confirming the receipt of complaint against five MLCs for alleged anti-party activities, state Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankarmurthy said notices would be served to them seeking explanation.

Addressing a news conference here, Shankarmurthy said he had returned on Saturday morning and was yet to read the complaint given by MLCs Ashwathnarayana and Somanna Bevinamarad. He read one page of the complaint copy in which action was sought against five MLCs, B J Puttaswamy, Shivaraj Sajjanavar, Mumtaz Ali Khan, Bharathi Shetty and Mohan Limbikai. “I will issue notices to them as per the rule book. I will be like a judge and not as a chairman while inquiring into the matter,” he added.

Without setting a deadline for action against the five MLCs who have identified with the KJP, Shankarmurthy said he would first issue notices to them seeking clarifications and provide a copy of the complaint to all of them. Ex parte decision would not be given. These MLCs will not be barred from attending the coming budget session as they are members of the House.

Shankarmurthy recalled a similar incident when A K Subbaiah had given a complaint against another MLC Arun Machaiah. However, Arun resigned even before the matter was investigated. Shankarmurthy said that at first, he would record the statements of the legislators and then initiate action.

According to Shankarmurthy, it was always good to inform the police before leaving the headquarters.

He said Governor H R Bhardwaj would address a joint session of Legislature at 11 am on February 4.

The Council would hold its business between February 5 and 13.
