Give assent to Bill that curbs SEC powers, Congress urges Governor

The Opposition Congress on Wednesday requested Governor H R Bharadwaj to immediately give assent to a Bill that aims to curb the powers of the State Election Commission (SEC).

A Congress leader, who did not wish to be named, said that the Governor told the party members that he needs to study the Karnataka Municipality and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Bill 2013, which was unanimously passed in the Legislature on Tuesday. According to be Bill the SEC cannot announce poll dates without the consent of the government. In the past, Congress has met Bharadwaj to urge him not to give assent to controversial Bills like the Cow Slaughter Bill.
