Schoolkids to get cow milk soon: Minister

Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Animal Husbandry T B Jayachandra said on Monday that cows’ milk will be supplied to schoolchildren under Ksheera Bhaghya, instead of milk powder that is currently being distributed.

Inaugurating the new milk package unit at Tumkur Milk Union (TMU) at Mallasandra here on Monday, the minister claimed that Ksheera Bhagya is his brain child.

“As a huge stock of milk powder lies unsold with the KMF, a deliberation was held with the MD, which gave rise to a solution,” he said and added that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to the plan.

Due to the pressure and criticism from the media, the plan was launched at the earliest by making use of the stock of milk powder, he added.

Since milk powder lacks fat and other nutrients that are vital for children, who suffer from malnutrition, cow’s milk will be distributed soon, he said.

Meanwhile, the minister also promised `20 crore for the setting up of the new flexi-package unit at the TMU plant.
