Rs 71 lakh unaccounted money seized from three persons in Udupi

UDUPI: Unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 71 lakh, in the new Rs 2,000 denomination, was seized from three persons near Shanthipalke in Bailoor, Karkala rural limits on Thursday evening. The trio is currently being questioned by the officials of Income Tax Department's (I-T) intelligence wing.

The operation was conducted based on a tip off by a police team led by Karkala circle inspector A Joy Antony. Three persons identified as Imran, Asif and driver of the vehicle - Deepak were found to be transporting a bundle of the new Rs 2,000 denomination notes totaling 3,550 in number to an undisclosed location from Mangaluru. The car they were travelling in was seized and trio was handed over to the I-T department by the police.

According to police, none of them could give any satisfactory explanation or produce any documents on enquired about the source of the money. I-T department officials have directed them to produce the documents justifying the possession before December 5, said sources.
