It is said that the elephant chased the duo and Monika ran away from the spot while Sumithra who could not run was thrown by the elephant. As a result she fell on a rock and died on the spot.

The wild elephant kicked Narayanaswamy, who later succumbed to injuries, in the hospital. The villagers blamed the forest officials for not reaching the spot even two hours after the first incident.

Gowda also said initially `2 lakh each will be given as compensation to the victims’ kin and after autopsy and the chargesheet another `3 lakh each will be given.
