Psychiatrists to now help cops beat stress

BENGALURU: Taking serious note of the stress under which police personnel work, the state government is all set to recruit 65 psychiatrists to provide professional counselling to the personnel.
More than 45 police personnel have committed suicide in the last three years due to various reasons, including job-related stress. The government has decided to appoint a counsellor in each taluk to offer professional help to stressed cops.

Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday said that 65 psychiatrists will be recruited in the first phase for counselling policemen who suffer from depression and tension while on duty.
Parameshwara, who handed over promotion letters to 1,200 policemen at a programme here, said the department will also get 150 new buses to improve mobility of the police force and 140 Bolero jeeps to strengthen police patrolling.

He also announced that one residential school in each of the seven zones in the state will be opened for the children of policemen in the next academic year.
