Cabinet okays 110 acres for film city

BENGALURU: The long-pending wish of the Kannada film industry to have a world-class film city in the state received a big push on Wednesday. The state Cabinet finally approved the proposal for granting 110 acres near Nanjangud in Mysuru district, giving five years of time for the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (KCA) to pay the land cost.

The land will be granted on a 30-year lease and the KCA’s request to defer the payment for five years has been accepted. KCA will implement the project with private sector participation, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters.

The project first proposed way back in 1978 had received support during the Ramakrishna Hegde regime when he allocated 365 acres near Hesaraghatta in Bengaluru. However, the project failed to make any progress. The Siddaramaiah government has now approved a new proposal to implement the project in Mysuru district with an initial allocation of 110 acres.

The cabinet also approved setting up of Banavasi Development Authority for drawing up and implementing plans for the development of Banavasi in Uttara Kannada district.
