BELAGAVI: The postmortem of Kaveri was conducted on Tuesday in the same hospital where her mother was undergoing treatment.

Savita fell sick after she came to know that her daughter had fallen into a borewell. The body of the six-year-old girl was recovered early on Tuesday and was taken to the mortuary in the hospital. Those who were with Savita at the hospital were told not to disclose the matter to her.

However, they said Savita, who observed changes in their behaviour, might have guessed that something went wrong and broke down. “My daughter did not come back alive. God was cruel to us,” she said.

Kaveri’s father Ajit who fell unconscious after Kaveri’s last rites, was rushed to the same hospital. The couple’s two other children Annapurna (7) and Pavan (2) are now with their relatives.

Cases were filed against Shankar Hipparagi in whose abandoned borewell Kaveri fell and died. Hipparaga is absconding.

Official sources said a compensation of Rs 1 lakh will be given to Kaveri’s parents. However, Ajit said, “We have lost our daughter and no money can compensate it. We request the government to cap all open boerwells, so that no other kid falls into it.”
