Amit Shah targets 4-fold jump in BJP’s social media reach

BENGALURU: BJP national president Amit Shah proved a tough task master for the party’s Social Media Cell in the state. Shah, who chaired a meeting of the media wing during his three-day visit, has set a challenging target of achieving a four-fold increase in social media reach of Karnataka BJP by his next visit to city, which could be the middle of next month.

Though BJP’s social media presence is far ahead of other political parties, Shah said it is not enough. Speaking to Express, a senior member of the BJP Social Media Cell said, “Shah asked us not to remain content just because we are ahead of our rivals. It is not enough to achieve the party’s Mission 150 in the forthcoming Assembly election. Shah has set a target of achieving a four-fold increase in our presence by the time he visits here to review the progress.”

Presently BJP Karnataka has 2.32 lakh followers on Facebook and 1.11 lakh followers on Twitter. This needs to be ramped up to 5 lakh and 4.40 lakh respectively by the time Shah visits state next time. He is expected to raise the target further as the elections approach. The Siddaramaiah government’s term is set to end in May, 2018.

About 3,500 members of BJP’s Social Media Cell attended the recently held conclave and the party is gearing up to ramp up this number in a big way. It has over 5,000 active members dedicated for the task and is constituting social media teams in all 224 assembly segments.

The social media wing is also working on its plan to replicate the party’s success in Uttar Pradesh assembly election by forming WhatsApp groups in each assembly constituency to influence the voters with pro-BJP content. “The target is to create more than 5,000 WhatsApp groups and we have already created about 2,000,” the member said.
