GADAG: A man from Mulagund has written an application to the President seeking mercy killing, saying he has not got any government facilities for many years. Hajaresha Makandar had applied for a house under a housing scheme to Town Panchayat but in vain. He is not able to go out for earning a living as he is disabled and the government is not providing any facilities, he said.

He has a wife (Asma Begum, 27) and a son (Mahammad Tanvir, 3) and a daughter (2). Makandar was a tractor driver, but lost his leg when the trolley of tractor fell on his leg in 2006. Later, he started begging at Mulgund bus stand.

Makandar said, “I made an appeal to the Gadag deputy commissioner for a house. But nothing has been done. Now my wife is ill and it is difficult for me to look after her medical expenses. I have a son and a daughter too. I have to feed all.... Finally, I have written an application seeking mercy killing”. Activist Mahantesh Kanavi of Mulagund said Makandar has been striving to get a house for the last 10 years, but government officials are not responding to his request. So I request the officials concerned to do the needful. Otherwise, we all will be responsible if his family takes the extreme step”.

“We have sent his application to DC who has also ordered officials to consider his application first. As we start allotting houses, he will be considered first”, said a senior official of Mulagund town panchayat.
