Dress code issue refuses to die

The dress code issue which raged at Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College here last week, has spread to other colleges of the city.

SHIVAMOGGA: The dress code issue which raged at Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College here last week, has spread to other colleges of the city. On Monday, tension prevailed at the Government First Grade College after a student wore a saffron shawl. The police had taken a route march in the city after the issue surfaced at the Sahydri College.

A holiday was also declared for the college as a precautionary measure. The police might have thought that they averted any possible escalation of the matter.

But the undercurrent appears to remain strong. The students of the Sahyadri College have been protesting demanding a dress code for all students irrespective of their religions. When the issue turned violent at the college last week, the Police Department held a meeting of all the stakeholders and finally resolved to drop the idea of making dress code compulsory.

Later, the college was closed till the issue is solved. But on Monday, when a student of the Government First Grade College at Bapuji Nagar came to college wearing a saffron shawl, some students of the other community asked him to remove it.

When he resisted, he was allegedly beaten up by the students, due to which tension prevailed for some time. Later, some students of the ATNC College in the city also wore saffron shawls and attended college. They said they would wear the shawls till the management takes action against the teachers who make students of another community wear jubba-pajam on Friday.

Kote police summoned the students of the both the communities to the station and enquired about dress code incident. Later, they were sent home with a warning of legal action if they continue the same activities, according to sources.
