BENGALURU: The number of tiger deaths in Karnataka rose to eight in the last 42 days with the loss of a tigress in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

Her carcass was found Saturday morning in the Hediyala range. Foresters said the death could have taken place Thursday. From the serious injuries to her body, they say it was the result of a fight with another animal, perhaps a tiger.

Speaking to New Indian Express, Bandipur Tiger Reserve director T Heeralal said vets are examining the carcass of the eight-year-old tigress to ascertain the cause of death. A post mortem will be held soon, he added.

Within Bandipur, this was the second tiger death in recent weeks. An old tiger succumbed after being captured and shifted to Bannerghatta for treatment. The other six deaths have occurred in Nagarhole.
