Drink lots of water, stay indoors in afternoons

With increasing temperatures, doctors suggest plenty of fluids, wearing soft fabrics of lighter colours to prevent absorption of heat, and staying indoors during peak afternoons. Soaring mercury levels bring with them a host of health problems, especially in elderly, heart patients and those with respiratory problems.
Dr Sudha Menon, director, internal medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, said, “Summer in Bengaluru brings various problems. Respiratory complaints, cough, wheezing, hay fever and allergic conjunctivitis are common.”

She, however, added that the present swine flu epidemic should wane once summer starts. Food-borne illnesses also rise due to preference for cold drinks and fruit juices, which are prepared in unhygienic conditons. There is also a tendency for food to spoil quickly due to the heat. Dysentery, vomiting and dehydration are also frequent. Dry skin, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are also common, so it is advisable to stay indoors in the afternoon and carry water and protect yourself when outdoors, she said.
