Poor yield for maize, but bumper for ragi

Extreme heat will lead to low yield in some crops that require lower temperatures. For some other crops, fruits and flowers, the high temperature is expected to be a boon.

According to former vice-chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences and agricultural scientist Prof M Mahadevappa,  crops like wheat and maize have a better yield in low temperatures.

The intense summer is expected to affect its yield adversely. But crops such as rice, ragi, mangoes will get a bumper yield.

Horticulture scientist Dr S V Hittalamani said the high temperature will improve sweetness and colour of fruits like grapes, watermelon and prevent bacteria-related diseases in pomegranate.

However, this will cause mangoes to fall from branches before ripening and banana peel to become darker.
Hittalamani said the quality and size of vegetables like cucumber, bitter gourd and pumpkin will improve at higher temperatures, adding that flowers like jasmine and rose will remain fresh for only a day.
