Tumakuru ASI dismissed on rape charges

Umesh had picked up the 31-year-old woman after she was found wandering alone and allegedly raped her in a moving jeep on Saturday night.

TUMAKURU: An assistant police sub-inspector from Tumakuru, Umesh S, who was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a mentally challenged woman, was dismissed from service on Monday.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed this to reporters saying, “I have sought a report on the case from police in this regard. The government has also ordered the dismissal of the accused ASI.”

Umesh had picked up the 31-year-old woman after she was found wandering alone and allegedly raped her in a moving jeep on Saturday night. Later he had dropped her home. Shocked by the incident, the family approached police. An FIR was registered and Umesh was arrested.

On Monday, the victim was produced before the judicial magistrate under section 164 of CrPC to record her statement.  The accused ASI and the driver of the private vehicle Eshwara have been remanded to judicial custody.

Tumakuru superintendent of police Isha Pant said she will be directly supervising the inquiry. “It will be done systematically and the charge sheet will be filed on time,” she told reporters.
The provisional medical report confirms rape but further forensic test results are awaited.
The expert committee on prevention of sexual violence against women and children led by Congress MLC V S Ugrappa visited the victim.

“The victim has received Rs 25,000 for medical expenses and the committee has recommended that she also receive `3 lakh under the Nirbhaya fund,” he added.
