MADIKERI: Forest officials spotted the carcass of a tiger aged 9-10 years beside Lakshmana Teertha river in Nittur on Sunday morning. With this, the number of tiger deaths in the state in last 23 days rose to five.

The tiger reportedly died due of injuries on its leg, face and parts of its neck. Hunsur wildlife division doctor Umashankar said the tiger was probably wounded while eating a porcupine. Owing to injuries, the tiger may not have been able to hunt.

Forest officials said the same tiger had attacked a labourer on Friday. CCTV footage from the incident showed injuries on its face.

He said that an operation initiated to catch the tiger was called off. Three elephants and more than 80 personnel, including tiger conservation force with veterinary doctors and drone cameras, had been searching for the tiger to prevent an attack on humans.
