Heavy rains trigger landslide in Kodagu

MADIKERI:Incessant rain in Kodagu district for the last two days triggered landslide at Perambady near Bhagamandala on Karnataka-Kerala border on Thursday.The connection between Karnataka and Kerala was disrupted due to the landslide. Soon after the incident, people informed the Public Works Department (PWD) and the officials suspected more landslides at the same spot as water is gushing towards the spot from Perambady lake.

Commuters, who travel between Virajpet and Kannanur, have to go via Gonikoppa, Kutta and Manandavady which is 160 km extra journey.Compound walls of three houses in Vidyanagar lane in Virajpet was damaged after the heavy rain. Revenue officials inspected the spot and directed to take some precautionary measures. Vehicular movement is disrupted at Malabar road as drain water is flowing on the road. Due to the heavy rain, both Keerehole and Lakshmana Theertha rivers are in spate. Those who are residing on the banks of river Keerehole in Gonikoppa fear flood water entering their houses. As retaining wall of one Shakir’s residence in Kaveri Hills collapsed, he incurred a loss of `4 lakh. Landslides also occurred at Mangaladevi Nagar, Chamundeshwari Nagar, Indiranagar in Madikeri.
