BENGALURU: The state Cabinet approved a whopping 23 days of general holidays for the calendar year 2018. Unlike earlier years, when employees could enjoy only about 17-18 days of holidays due to some of the occasions falling on Sundays, this time around, almost all the occasions are on weekdays.

Only Chandramana Ugadi (March 18) and Dr Ambedkar Jayanthi (April 14) fall on Sunday and a second Saturday respectively. Together with second Saturdays and Sundays, government employees are looking at a staggering 87 days of holidays, excluding restricted holidays. While there have been calls for reducing the number of holidays for government employees, the state government is unlikely to consider it at the moment in view of the coming polls.
