12 hospitalised after alleged food poisoning in Karnataka hostel

Sources said that students have complained of hygiene problems in the hostel in the past. However, no action was taken.

KARWAR: As many as 12 students of Kittur Rani Chennamma Residential School of Bhatkal had to hospitalised after consuming the alleged poor-quality food served at the hostel.   

According to sources, nine students were treated at a Bhatkal government hospital on Monday, three more students were taken to the hospital on Tuesday. One of the severely-affected students was shifted to a private hospital in Kundapur.

Sources said that students have complained of hygiene problems in the hostel in the past. However, no action was taken.

On Wednesday, assistant commissioner MN Manjunath, tahsildar and other officials visited the hotels to inquire about the issue. District social welfare department assistant director S Purushottam will be visiting the hostel on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking to Express, S Purushottam said that he had received information on Tuesday that four students were admitted to hospital. However, he said that he was not aware of other students getting treatment in Bhatkal government hospital. He had visited the hostel couple of weeks ago, but had not witnessed any faults in food and other facilities, he added. "I will visit the hostel on Wednesday afternoon to take stock of the ground reality," he added.
