Karnataka: Corporator opens fire in air during Shivaji Jayanti celebration

Police said Manjunath Kadam garlanded the statue on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti and in a celebratory mood he opened fire in the air.

DHARWAD: Congress nominated corporator Manjunath Kadam on Monday stirred up a storm after he allegedly fired two shots in the air using his licensed weapon after garlanding Shivaji statue here at Shivaji Circle. 

Police said Kadam garlanded the statue on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti and in a celebratory mood he opened fire in the air. The shots in the air caused panic in the area. The police were rushed to the spot after being alerted. They have secured the revolver and are gathering information from him about the incident.

Police Commissioner MN Nagaraj said the revolver was a licensed one. The town police are verifying the incident. The police also collecting details whether it is customary to shoot in the air during the celebration. If he is found guilty, he would be booked under appropriate sections of Arms Act, said the commissioner.
