Overpriced speed governors in Karnataka questioned

Cutting across party lines, members of the Council demanded a review of the policy of buying speed governors from just two companies in Karnataka which are allegedly charging higher prices.

BENGALURUCutting across party lines, members of the Council demanded a review of the policy of buying speed governors from just two companies in Karnataka which are allegedly charging higher prices. On the last day of the budget session, JD(S) MLC Puttanna raised the issue saying, “The Union government has given nod to use speed governors from 19 authorised agencies. But the state Transport Department has given nod to only two of them. These two agencies also supply speed governors in other states.

But, in Karnataka, they charge B8,000 to B9,000, whereas the same agencies sell it at B2,500 in other states. This shows that officials in the Transport Department are hand in glove with the agencies. This needs to be probed,’’ he demanded. Transport Minister H M Revanna defended the department saying that even though it’s the same companies, the ones sold in Karnataka are of better quality. “We need to provide good quality speed governors which are a little expensive. These agencies had quoted B13,500 but we have reduced it,’’  he said.
