KARWAR: In a heart-wrenching incident, a paralysed man could not inform anyone about his wife’s death after she died in front of him, a week ago, at KHB Colony in Karwar. His wife, a domestic help, may have had a heart attack, according to the locals. She was found dead seated on a chair. The incident came to light only on Sunday when the deceased’s brother came looking for the couple.

The deceased is Girija Kolkar. Her body was found in a decomposed state. Her husband Anand Kolkar has been bed-ridden for a few years following a paralytic attack. Police said, “On Sunday afternoon, Girija’s brother Subramanya Madiwal visited them only to find his sister dead. He informed the Karwar town police station. Police immediately shifted Anand to a hospital. Anand was critically ill as he had not taken any medicines or eaten anything for a week.”

Anand was shifted to Karwar government hospital and is being treated. Doctors have said he is out of danger and he is on ventilator support, police said.Police suspect that Girija may have died a week ago as she had not visited any of the houses she was working for the last one week.Subramanya, who lives in Kavalakki village in Honnavar taluk, too tried calling his sister several times last week. Since she did not respond, he came looking for her. When he visited, both front and back doors of the house were locked from inside.

Suspecting something fishy, with the neighbour’s help, Subramanya peeped into the house through the roof and found Girija’s body in a decomposed state and Anand helplessly lying on bed in front of her.According to the family members, Anand was paralysed for the last 10 years but he was able to do daily chores by himself. He fell ill four years ago and has been bed-ridden since then. The couple did not have any children. Girija’s earnings were mostly spent on Anand’s medicines.

Subramanya said he used to visit them often. He said, “She was healthy and her sudden death has come as a shocker to us. Anand’s relatives stay in Sadashivagada near Karwar. They never took care of him, but they used to enquire about his health over the phone.”
