Karnataka: Two elephant calves die after being hit by train

In a bizarre incident, two elephant calves were killed on the spot after a train hit them near Edakumari village adjacent to Western ghats in Sakleshpur taluk in the early hours of Monday.

HASSAN: In a bizarre incident, two elephant calves were killed on the spot after a train hit them near Edakumari village adjacent to Western ghats in Sakleshpur taluk in the early hours of Monday.

According to the forest officials the incident occurred when the calves were crossing the railway track.

The calves were aged eight and twelve years and were hit by a goods train going to Bengaluru from Mangaluru.

The forest officials rushed to the spot following the information provided by the railway authorities and cleared the carcass from the track.  The train traffic was disrupted for two hours due to the incident. The carcass were burnt after conducting the postmortem in the forest. The forest officials are also suspecting that two more elephants were injured in the melee as they found blood stains in a nearby forest.

Efforts are to find the injured elephants.
