Legislative Council elections will be a prestige battle for political parties in Mysuru

Three weeks after assembly elections that were held on May 12, Mysuru region is set for Legislative Council elections to South Teachers constituency scheduled to be held on Friday.

BENGALURU:Three weeks after assembly elections that were held on May 12, Mysuru region is set for Legislative Council elections to South Teachers constituency scheduled to be held on Friday.
Though the partners in government, the Janata Dal ( Secular)  and the Congress, have pitted separate candidates, it has turned into a prestigious election for both, with the principal opposition party BJP leaving no stone unturned to avenge their failure to form a government.

While sitting MLC Marithibbe Gowda who is also the deputy chairman of Legislative Council is looking for a fourth straight victory, Congress’ M Lakshmana who finished second in the previous elections is looking to wrest the seat.

Not willing to remain a mute player, BJP’s B Niranjana Murthy is hoping to make a dent, with the saffron party failing to open an account from the particular seat. The remaining six are independents with total nine candidates in the fray.

Gowda, who has remained unassailable ever since he won the maiden elections held in 2000 on Congress ticket, has been more than lucky to win the elections irrespective of hopping to different parties.
While he won the elections held in 2006 as an independent (as all his efforts to contest on JD(S)  ticket was foiled with  regional party favouring another candidate), he switched over to the JD(S) in the subsequent elections held in 2012 and is seeking re-election from the same party.
