VHP, Bajrang Dal want ladies bars, live bands shut

MANGALURU: Stating that the number of ladies bars and live bands are on the rise, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal on Tuesday demanded cancellation of their licenses and deny permission to new ones. Massage parlours and pubs too were in the list of elements 'harming the ethos of the culturally rich city,' they said.

Asha Jagadish from VHP women's wing hinted of a chance of repeating the pub attack. Retrospecting on the incidents in the city, she said, "You have understood why Pub attack and homestay attack took place. If things continue the same way, the commotion of that sort is bound to take place."

Leaders of the two Hindutva groups threatened huge protests through women's outfits and the Sangh Parivar if the district administration and and police department failed to crack the whip immediately.Jagadeesh Shenava, president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Dakshina Kannada, told reporters that liveband had begun operations at a mall in Lalbagh and there were repeated attempts to open similar businesses at Hampankatte and Pumpwell.

He alleged that young women were made to sing, dance, beyond serving liquor. He hinted of chances that these women being be forced into sexual favours after business hours. Problems to youth caused by pubs, were enourmous, he believed, and compared it to the rise in suicides during the single number lottery system. "Several parents and representatives from women's organisations have registered their grievances with us in this connection.

Such watering holes have been damaging the ethos of the city besides destroying health of the youngsters," Shenava said.When girls drink together with guys unethical acts increase, he said, in defence of men alone drinking at a bar.Recalling the recent incident of derogatory posts against Hindu deities on social media, Shenava said such incidents had greatly hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus at large.

He urged the police department to take stringent action such social media users and their instigators and said he was assured by the then police commissioner Vipul Kumar on taking action on those even sharing the content.

The debate took shape after an excerpt of a book by a journalist became known on social media where the author wrote about finge elements capitalising on fear.
