BJP general secretary Mohammad Anwar murdered, protests erupt in Chikmagalur

BENGALURU: The general secretary of the Chikmagalur city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was murdered in a brutal way on Friday night around 9.30 pm and the incident led to a panic and protests in the city on Saturday.

Mohammad Anwar, was stabbed repeatedly by two bike-borne assailants when he was about to board his car while returning from his friends house in Gowry Kaluve in the city. Both assailants were wearing helmets and the pillion rider first stabbed Anwar with a dagger on the chest and abdomen while the rider also stabbed him several times injuring his liver, heart and kidney.

Anwar, 40 years old, was an active member of the BJP and was serving as its minority cell president. According to police, the incident took place behind the Good Morning Shop near Gowry Kaluve.

The police registered an FIR against five suspects including two people named Yusuf Haji and Aseef based on a complaint by Anwar's brother Kabir. His murder resulted in a huge protest by BJP leaders and workers who thronged the Malle Gowda General Hospital on Saturday morning to view his body. According to sources, he was stabbed 13 times.

MLA CT Ravi who visited the hospital said that the murder of BJP workers was being seen in coastal areas and said that it seemed to be the work of professional killers. Later the Body was taken out to BJP Office Panchajanya where it was kept for sometime for public viewing before being taken to his home.

On the other side of town, hundreds of workers including CT Ravi and Member of Parliament Shobha Karandlaje staged a protest at Azad Park before marching to the office of the Deputy Commissioner to submit a memorandum.

Receiving the memo, Deputy Commissioner Srirangaiah said that he had collected the information from the SP who has promised to investigate the case from various angles and promised suitable action.ends
