BENGALURU: A pregnant woman had a miraculous escape from death when she managed to survive being pushed into the Tungabhadra river by her husband who was trying to kill her.

The incident took place on Thursday night near Pattepur village in Rattihalli taluk in Haveri district where the river is flowing at capacity. The accused, Rupeshgouda, was arrested by the police on Saturday. Rupeshgouda belongs to the Chikkabbar village of Rattihalli taluk and had married Arunakumari of a nearby village around one and half years ago.

The trigger for the incident is said to have been an argument between the couple about having a child. While Arunakumari was pregnant, Rupeshgouda did not want to have the child and this led him to take her to the river late on Thursday night and push her in.

According to police, he then returned back to his home. According to Arunakumari, she managed to cling on to a rock in the middle of the river around 2 kilometers downstream and call for help. But no one heard her screams.

Villagers spotted her only on Friday and luckily she survived the murder attempt. Her family lodged a complaint with the police and she was sent for a medical checkup. According to Police Sub Inspector Aravind, Rupeshgouda had been arrested and would be produced before the court in Hirekerur on Saturday itself. "Investigations are on and a case has been registered," he said.
