SHIVAMOGGA: Traffic on the busy Charmadi Ghat stretch in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district almost came to a standstill on Sunday after a lorry overturned.

According to the police, the traffic deadlock started from 10 am and lasted till 1 pm, with vehicles lining up bumper-to-bumper for about 5 km -- from Charmadi to Kottigehara. The police arrived at the stretch and cleared the jam. Charmadi Ghat is one of the important routes which connects Chikkamagaluru, Dharmasthala, Mangaluru and Bengaluru. Banakal police have registered a case with regard to the overturning of the lorry.

However, Chikkamagaluru SP Harish Pandey clarified that there was no traffic jam, but vehicles were stopped for a while to remove the lorry which had fallen off the road. The accident occurred in Belthangady limits in Dakshina Kannada.

In June this year, massive landslides at Charmadi Ghat had resulted in a 14-hour-long traffic jam which affected more than 2,000 commuters. The jam had occurred around 1.30 am and was cleared by around 3 pm. In a heartwarming gesture, locals, police and people’s representatives came to the aid of the stranded commuters supplying them food and water.
