THRISSUR: Writers Vishnu Narayanan Namboodiri and Punathil Kunjabdulla have been granted fellowships of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi for 2009.

Announcing the fellowships, Puraskarams for the overall contribution to literature and awards and endowments for 2009, Akademi president P Valsala said the fellowship consisted of Rs 50,000, a gold pendent, weighing 16 gm, a citation, a ponnada and a plaque. Valsala said that Ettumanur Somadasan, Erumeli Parameswaran Pillai, G Balakrishnan Nair and P V K Panayal were selected for the Puraskarams for their overall contribution to literature. The Puraskaram consists of Rs 30,000, a ponnada and a plaque. Valsala also announced the Akademi Awards consisting of Rs 25,000, a citation and a plaque.

The award for novel has gone to Benyamin’s novel ‘Aadujeevitham’ while N K Desam’s ‘Mudra’ bagged the award for poetry. The award for drama was won by K M Raghavan Nambiar.

K R Meera’s work ‘Ave Mariya’ bagged the award for short story. K S Ravikumar bagged the award for literary criticism. The award for informatics has gone to Vijayakumar Menon.

Valsala also announced the endowment awards for 2009. They are the I C Chacko Award (Rs 2,000) to Dr Joseph Scaria, C B Kumar Award (Rs 1,500) to K M Narendran, K R Namboodiri Award (Rs 2,000) to E Chandrasekharan Nair, Kanakasree Award (Rs 2,000) to M B Manoj, Geeta Hiranyan Award (Rs 5,000) to Shajikumar P V and G N Pillai Award (Rs 3,000) to Dr Madhu Vasudevan.

Valsala said the awards were finalised at the executive committee meeting of the Akademi held on Tuesday.

The awards will be distributed at the annual function of the Akademi to be held this month.

Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for TJS George

THRISSUR: ‘Ghoshayathra’ by eminent journalist T J S George has bagged the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in the autobiography section.

The Akademi fellowships and awards for the year 2009 were announced here on Tuesday by Kerala Sahitya Akademi president P Valsala. ‘Ente Keralam’ of Ravindran bgged the award for travelogue and K Satchidanandan bagged the award for translation. The award for children’s literature has gone to A Vijayan and Marshal bagged the award for humorous literature.

‘Ghoshayathra’ was first serialised in the Samakalika Malayalam, a sister publication of The New Indian Express Group .
