Vilappilsala tense; DYFI leader’s father, BJP worker attacked

Tension is prevailing at Vilappilsala after a BJP worker, identified as Sreejith, was attacked near Kundamoozhi by suspected DYFI activists while he was having tea at a hotel on Tuesday noon.

According to police, the attack appeared to be an act of retaliation to the hacking of DYFI Vilappilsala Vadakkeyil unit joint secretary Arun Kumar’s father Asokan.

Asokan, 48, was attacked in the wee hours of Tuesday by a group of armed assailants. The group comprising of eight people who came under the cover of darkness in search of the DYFI leader first pelted stones at the house. On hearing the noise, Asokan went out of the house to check what is happening.

The armed gang held him and inquired whether his son was in the house. When he replied negatively, the assailants entered the house and checked the rooms. When they found that the DYFI leader was not there, they first hacked Asokan on his limbs and then beat his wife before escaping into  darkness.

The injured were taken to the Medical College Hospital. In protest against the attack, DYFI and CPM activists observed hartal in the area.

Police had maintained vigil in the area due to fear of retaliation. It was amidst the tight security that the 28-year-old BJP worker was attacked. Police have registered cases in both the incidents.
