Kerala monsoon: Rain-related death toll touches 143

Two persons died in rain-related incidents on Wednesday taking the overall toll to 143 since the onset of the monsoon season, disaster management officials said.

 Those killed in rain-related incidents on Wednesday are: Sunil Kumar, 38 from Kongad in Palakkad and Kiran G, 14, from Hosdurg in Kasargod. Both of them drowned following heavy rain, officials said.

 Four houses were destroyed and 130 damaged, causing a loss of Rs 25.61 lakh.

Crops spread over an area of 133.05 hectares were damaged in heavy rain and the overall loss is estimated at Rs 4.5 crore.

 At present, there are 30 relief camps across the state, out of which 21 are in Alappuzha, eight in Kozhikode and one in Pathanamthitta.

 A total of 4523 people are housed in these relief camps.
