Somayagam returns after 48 years

The devotees at the the Sukapuram village, near here are overwhelmed that the Agnishtoma Somayagam has come back to their place, where it was reborn after a long gap of several years.

Somayagam was restarted here in AD 345 under Mezhathol Agnihotri. The Yagam was held here several times until 1965 and it has come back here again after a long gap of 48 years. Somayagam has a history of around 10,000 years. It was started in the Vedic Age and it is believed that the Yagam is good to heal the soul and body of the participant. The Yagam, which was started on Monday, will last till Saturday.

The rites in the Yagam will end with setting fire to the Yagasala. “All the Pundits leading the rituals at the Somayagam belong to the Sukapuram village.  They have led the rituals at the Somayagams held at various parts of the state. But it took several years for Somayagam to be conducted at its home place again,” Edamana Narayanan Potti, one of the advisers of the Yagam, said. The Yagam is an offering for the good of the entire Universe.

The particles of herbs, which are poured to the Yagam fire, will also purify the atmosphere of the place where the Yagam is being conducted.

“The Yagam is a demonstration of the fundamental laws of the Universe. The Yagasala is believed to be the body of both the Universe and the human. The Yagasala has several parts representing different parts of the body. The Yagam fire is burning at the head part of the body representing the brain power. The juice of Somalatha, a herb grown in the Himalayas, is poured as offering in the fire of the Yagam,” Narayanan Potti added. Different rituals will be performed in the six days of the Yagam.
