The Irrigation Department has adopted a novel method to deposit the clothes used by pilgrims on both sides of the bridges across Pampa near Manappuram.
The department has erected floating nets on both sides of the Triveni bridge and the foot overbridge over Pampa to the bathing ghat at Manappuram. By installing the system, huge deposits of cloth in the river could be removed and the pilgrims will get the message against dumping in the river. Though, the auction for the collection of clothes fetched a whopping amount of about Rs 35 lakh for the Travancore Devaswom Board this year, even after the collection of clothes, huge deposit of clothes was found on the river bed during the summer days.
The Irrigation Department feels that the new method would help in reducing the depositing of clothes in the river during the ongoing season.
