After suffering losses which ran into crores of rupees on account of mineral sand smuggling, the state government has begun an initiative to put an end to the menace in the district.
The Police Department conducted raids at various places in Kayamkulam taluk following the directives of the Home Ministry, and confiscated more than 20 loads of sand during the raids.
Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers and security arrangements have been enhanced to nab those responsible for illegal sand mining in the coastal panchayats of the district.
The Police Department handed over the samples of confiscated sand to the Mining and Geology Department to separate the contents of the sand. Raids were also conducted.
