Stop dumping Nuclear Waste on Kerala's Border with TN, Says Achuthanandan

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday that the State Government should intervene urgently to stop the dumping of nuclear waste at Theni on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.

He told a news conference here that it was a most dangerous act on the part of the government to allow the dumping of nuclear waste.

He pointed out that he had made it clear that huge tunnels were being constructed as part of setting up a lab for neutrino experiment and the State Government was in the dark over the issue. Now, secret moves are on to dump the nuclear wastes deep underground at Pottippuram village .

Institute of Mathematical Sciences which is behind the neutrino project had submitted a comprehensive project to  collect nuclear wastes on April 22, 2010.

Now, the project is under the consideration of the Environment Impact Assessment Authority under the Tamil Nadu Government. As this will be creating serious health hazards, it cannot be allowed. He asked the Chief Minister to clarify whether he was aware for the developments.

Achuthanandan pointed out that when the Supreme Court had asked the government to clarify where the nuclear waste of Koodankulam plant would be dumped, it had only stated that it would be dumped in an underground cellar.

That means that the government had even left the court in the dark on this issue.

The only place where the nuclear waste being dumped was at New Mexico in United States in the underground cellar in 1999. Large-scale leak was reported from here on February 14.
