Planned Bid to Destroy IFFK: Adoor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A planned attempt is going on to destroy the IFFK, director Adoor Gopalakrishnan has alleged.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan, the advisory committee chairman of the festival, said that some people are deliberately creating controversies and some mediapersons are also a part of this. He was speaking at the Parakkode N R Kurup Foundation award-giving ceremony to poet O N V Kurup here on Saturday.

“I didn’t make the remark that those who didn’t know English should not come for the festival. I accept the government’s decision to reject the committee’s recommendations. However, the government’s decision was not unilateral but was made after consulting me,’’ Adoor said.

“The controversies were based on the things which I didn’t say. Those who come up with criticism know nothing about cinema  and are those who do not go to theatres to watch good movies. Mediapersons questioned me like the accused in the cases related to Saritha S Nair. They have no knowledge about cinema. I am of the opinion that firsttimers should not be given entry to IFFK. They have many other options to watch movies. I just tried to make the registration accurate. The DYFI and Youth Congress workers protested against me without knowing what had happened. I am not holding any post to resign as I am just an advisor,’’ he said,

Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash inaugurated the function.
