Orphanage Raided Over Minor's Sexual Abuse

ALUVA: The police on Friday raided an orphanage in Kothamangalam and took its owner and caretaker into custody, following complaints that a minor inmate was sexually abused.

Tommy Scaria and Chandran, owner and caretaker of SH Home, respectively, were taken into custody.

“The institution housed 4 girls and one boy, all below the age of 10. The incident came to light after one of the inmates complained to a teacher that she was sexually abused,” said Ernakulam Rural SP Sateesh Bino.

Officials of the Child Welfare Committee had visited the institution recently, and had declared it unfit. Interestingly, it was found that the orphanage was in possession of all the necessary documents. “Chandran used to visit the orphanage to assist his wife who is a staff there. Chandran is an alcoholic, who often abused the children,” said officials of the Special Juvenile Police Unit that conducted the raid.
