Idli Eating Contest Claims 1 Life

PALAKKAD: A 52-year-old man, Kandamuthan of Nellukuthupara near Athikode at Chittur, died when the idli he was eating as part of a competition got stuck in his throat on Thiruvonam day.

Kandamuthan was one among the 15 participants who were part of the idli eating competitions organised by the Yuvathara Arts and Sports Committee of Polpully on Onam day, Chittur police said.

The idli eating competitions were held at Nellukuthupara which was watched by around 200 people.

The rules of the competitions stated that the person eating the maximum number of idlis in a fixed time without drinking water would be getting the prize.

Police said that Kandamuthan, son of Chellan, ate two idlis and while eating the third one, it got stuck in his throat and he suffocated. Though he was rushed to the Palakkad District Hospital, he died.

The post mortem was conducted at the District Hospital.

The body was later  handed over to the relatives. Kandamuthan is survived by his wife Usha and daughters Nisha and Asha.
