Achuthanandan opposes govt bid to give clearance to unauthorised constructions

Putting pressure on the Left government in the state, CPM veteran V S Achuthanandan has urged the former to withdraw from its move to give clearance to unauthorised constructions.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Putting pressure on the Left government in the state, CPM veteran V S Achuthanandan has urged the former to withdraw from its move to give clearance to unauthorised constructions.

In an official statement, the Administrative Reforms Commission chairman has asked the government not to permit big constructions and resorts under the cover of granting clearance to unauthorised constructions of less than 1,500 sq ft. If media reports in this regard are correct, it would facilitate illegal building construction in the state, VS said.

Achuthanandan, a champion of fights against unauthorised and illegal constructions throughout his tenure as both Chief Minister and Opposition leader, has many a time spoken against the land mafia inside and outside of the legislative assembly. In his statement the veteran leader accused the resort mafia and bureaucrats for attempting to get nod for multi-storey buildings and resorts, constructed in violation of coastal regulation norms and levelling wet lands.

“Issuing clearance to constructions like Kapico resort at Panavally, DLF flat at Maradu and illegal constructions along the coastal belt and Munnar raises concerns,” VS said adding that he had taken a strong stance against such illegal constructions during the time of the previous UDF government. Considering this the government should withdraw from the move to give permission to illegal constructions, he said.
