Costford to help women ‘light up’ their lives

After giving training in masonry to Kudumbashree workers, the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford) will help women enter

THRISSUR: After giving training in masonry to Kudumbashree workers, the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford) will help women enter another ‘man’s field’ - electrical works. Costford is planning to train women in maintenance of home appliances.

It is the success of masonry training that motivated Costford to experiment in the new arena. Costford official Meera Mohan said the project will be started next month. “Under the new project, Costford will give training in maintenance of home appliances like fan, electric iron, mixer grinder, gas stove etc,” she said.

Masonry training was given to Kudumbashree workers and the cost for the project was borne by Kudumbashree. In the latest project, Costford is trying to get registration under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY). The project cost will be met by funds from the DDU-GKY. Costford cannot collect fee from trainees as they will be Kudumbashree workers.

As per the rules of DDU-GKY, the registered agency - here  Costford - should find placement for the trainees. So, Costford is planning to club it with its Pakal Veedu project. The trained women will be getting repair works from houses  coming under the Pakal Veedu.
