Mentally disabled woman starves to death in Edappal

MALAPPURAM: A mentally disabled woman reportedly starved to death after she stopped taking food for over a week in Edappal, near here, on Monday. The woman's daughter was also found lying nearby and was rushed to the hospital by neighbours.

55-year-old Shobhana belonged to a wealthy family who owned properties worth millions in the locality.  According to Rabiya, a member of Vattamkulam panchayat,  the mother and the daughter were suffering from a mental disorder and were living in their own house, completely cut off from the care of other family members.

Rabiya said that Shruthi, who was unable to care for herself or raise the alarm bell, appeared frail and weak after not taking food for days.

Shobhana's one-day-old corpse was found in the bedroom of her house when Rabiya went for a routine visit,. Her 26-year-old daughter, Shruthi who had not eaten for days, was also found near Shobhana and taken to the hospital by the neighbours.

The police said that the initial investigation has revealed that, Shobhana didn't have food for a long time and starved to death.

It is reported that the other family members who were living nearby ignored the duo.

The Changaramkulam police have registered a case and an investigation is on.
