KOCHI: Playback singer Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, who set a new record for playing the gayatri veena - a single-stringed musical instrument - for nearly six hours, will be felicitated with an honorary doctorate from the World Records University (WRU), United Kingdom.

Vijayalakshmi will be bestowed with the doctorate for her feat, which earned her an entry into the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records.

“Vijayalakshmi has been selected for the doctorate. Now, only document processing work remains, which will take around six months,” said WRU representative Vivek Raja.

Vijayalakshmi said she had not expected receiving a doctorate for her effort.
“I thank everyone for the support,” she said.
