KOTTAYAM: A man’s decayed body, cut into two pieces, was found abandoned in two plastic sacks in wayside bushes at Manganam, near here, on Sunday.

The police team, which took out the parts of the body, however, could not recover its head.

According to police, torso and below-the-waist, kept in two separate sacks, were found thrown off on the Kanjikuzhy-Puthuppalli road at Mandiram junction.

The incident came to light when local residents conducted a search following obnoxious smell in the area. Local resident Biju found the leg of a human being around 9.30 am when he tried to move a sack using a spade and he informed the police. They said the body was cut in to pieces using a sharp weapon.

“We could not recover the head. We’ve launched an investigation into the incident,” said a police officer.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital at Kottayam and DNA samples were collected to ascertain the dead man’s identity. Kottayam DySP Zacharia Mathew said he had also passed information to all police stations across the state and started collecting details of man-missing cases.

“The body was around 4-5 days old, which was of a man below 40 years. We’re awaiting post-mortem results to get more details. We’ve also collected the man-missing details,” said Mathew.

A saffron dhothi, shirt and a pair of footwears were found along with the body.

Though the police launched a massive search operation, they could recover the head. Kottayam district police in-charge Karuppa Swamy visited the spot.
