KOZHENCHERRY : An assortment of entertaining programmes was served to audience on the third day of Noopura, the MG University Youth Festival being held at Kozhencherry. Folk dance, margamkali, kolkali, Duffmutt and others were the highlight of the day.

A kathaprasangam (story-telling) competition at Mala Aravindan Nagar in St Thomas college proved the traditional arts is nowhere near extinction. Several themes chosen by the participants focused on socially and politically-relevant matters.

“Normally, youngsters lack interest in this form of story-telling. However, the performances show it is still cherished,” said Archana, a spectator.

Music lovers were also in for a treat on the day as they listened to performers playing wind instruments, percussions and string instruments. A Duffmutt performance by a team clad in police uniform enthused spectators. English poetry recitation, poetry writing, film review, essay writing, short story and poetry writing were also held. The programmes continued well into the night.

As for the results, Ernakulam colleges continued their dominion over other participants on the third day. Maharaja’s College had the lead with 28 points. St Theresa’s College and MES College were close behind in the second and third place with 25 and 24 points, respectively.

Organisational hiccups
The spirit of the festival was dampened somewhat due to organisational failures. THe inability of the organisers to publish the results on time was a major issue. There were also complaints regarding the system of food service. This led to protests by a student organisation. “There is lack of coordination. The organisers could have avoided several glitches if they were careful,” said a student.

The search continues
Abrid Shine, the director of the upcoming movie ‘Poomaram’, continued his search for acting talents at the event. He was seen interacting with the participants, taking selfies and videotaping various moments of the festival.
