

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an effort to realise the goal of ‘quality education pupils’ right’, the Left Government will be revamping the school education system.
As part of the ‘public education rejuvenation campaign’, the government is for revising the curriculum and providing high quality training to teachers, Governor P Sathasivam said in his policy address to the Assembly on Thursday.
The government is also for revamping the higher education sector with focus on quality, access and equity, the Governor said.
Schools: As part of the ‘high-tech school programme’, all classrooms from Standard VIII to XII in government and aided high schools and higher secondary schools will be converted to smart classrooms by 2017. Computer labs will be set up in all lower primary schools in the next two years. Production of digital content and uploading the content on the web portal for free and open learning will be taken up. The government is also for modernising laboratories and libraries in schools. It also proposes to set up digital repositories in schools and arts-sports-cultural parks. As part of ensuring inclusive education, autism parks will be established at selected locations. Pre-school education system will be scientifically restructured and modernised.
Higher education: In the higher education sector, awards will be instituted to recognise faculty and students who excel in research. He said steps are being taken for improving the basic facilities, including laboratory and library facilities, in arts and science colleges to convert them into centres of excellence. The government engineering colleges would be converted into institutions of national eminence and international visibility in terms of published works, research output, patents and community-level contributions.
