Achuthanandan seeks steps to end exploitation of water at Puthussery

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Administrative Reforms Commission chairman V S Achuthanandan has come out against Pepsi company demanding action against the multinational for alleged water exploitation.
In the wake of severe potable water crisis in in Puthussery grama panchayat, the authorities should take stringent action against the company, V S demanded.

He said the company continues to take 2.3 lakh litres of water per day based on a 2011 court order. “Of the seven bore-wells, pumping is carried out from three. Taking into consideration the acute water shortage, strict directives were issued to the officials concerned to stop the company from taking water,” the statement said.
Directives were issued during the district development council meet in January and later. Even after the water crisis affected potable water supply in many panchayats in Malampuzha, the directive has not been followed, VS said.
The CPM veteran warned of major agitations against the authorities if they fail to take action in the issue.
